Field Study

EPISODE 1
MY ASSESSMENT LIST
Name of FS Student:     Abigail Y. Aggabao
  Course:                          Bachelor Of Secondary Education
  Resource Teacher:        Mrs. Pataueg
Cooperating School:     Isabela National High School

 My Target

At the end of this activity, you will be competent in identifying and naming different assessment methods used in the classroom.

My Task

·         Observe at least three classes and make a list of the assessment methods used by teachers.
·         In my list, classify assessment methods as to conventional and authentic and alternative.
·         Describe how each assessment method was used, including my personal observations.
·         Confer with my FS teacher for the assessment list.
·         Reflect on my experience.

My Tools

As you visit schools and observe assessment practices in at least three classes, document your observations using the activity forms provided for you in this reference. For your pen-and-paper test items, customize a table of specification, and prepare the test material based on the prescriptions of the school where you do class observation.

CLASS 1 OBSERVATION

Name of the School Observed:    Isabela National High School
School Address:                         Claravall St. Sn Vicente, Ilagan City, Isabela
Date Visited:                              December 2, 2014
Grade/Year Level:                      Grade-9 (Temperance)
Subject Area:                             Science(Earth Science)

ASSESSMENT TOOLS
DESCRIPTION
(Bulleted description of how the assessment method is used relative to subject matter, levels of learning behaviour, length, etc.)

Pen and paper test
( worksheet)

-

The teacher used the traditional modes of assessment through the use of “worksheet activity”. She let her students to answer the given questions and situations on the worksheet to ascertain how well her students have understood the lesson. She also makes sure that the students are 1 meter apart with each other to avoid cheating.

CLASS 2 OBSERVATION

Name of the School Observed:  Isabela National High School
School Address:                       Claravall St. Sn Vicente, Ilagan City, Isabela
Date Visited:                            December 2, 2014
Grade/Year Level:                    Grade -7 (Tanguile)
Subject Area:                           Science (Physics )

ASSESSMENT TOOLS
DESCRIPTION

ORALS AND
 PRESENTATIONS

The teacher wrote all the names of her students the he put it on a container, then she told her students that whoever the name she will pick, will have to answer/ present her answer in front. Their topic is all about “Speed, Motion, and Acceleration” it involves analysis and justification   in solving a problem. He used orals and presentations to assess the students’ communication skills and problem solving abilities.

CLASS 3 OBSERVATION

Name of the School Observed:   Isabela National High School
School Address:                        Claravall St. Sn Vicente, Ilagan City, Isabela
Date Visited:                             December 9, 2014
Grade/Year Level:                     Grade 7 (Banaba)
Subject Area:                            Science (Physics)

Performance Based Assessment
(Rubric)

-Before the teacher present the topic “sound” to her students, she group the students into four (4) consisting of nine (9) members in every group. The task is that they must have to prepare a simple demonstration on how sound is being produce. The teacher prepared a rubric then she presented it to her students because this will give the students an understanding of what she will be looking for or simply this will be the student’s basis on how they will be judge/rate by their teacher.

ESSAY

WORKSHEET ACTIVITY

-The teacher designed a rubric and presented it to her students, for the students to have an idea on how they will be judge according to their performances.

-the teacher presented a problem and she let her students to present their answers in front with justification to find out if they can able to explain what they are doing not just simply solve the problem but they must have to explain it orally.

-after discussing the lesson, the teacher presented a simple situation then she asked her students to give their own insights/ideas. The teacher used this tool to assess and develop at the same time, the reasoning abilities of her students.

-After the discussion, the teacher immediately gave her students a worksheet activity just to find out if the students can able to apprehend the lesson well.

Analysis
 1. Was there a variety of assessment methods used by the teacher? How relevant was/were the assessment method/s used?

Yes, here are some methods used by the teacher; pen and paper, orals and presentations, performance based, etc. The methods used by the teacher were relevant because one of the reasons is that the learning target she was seeking was successfully attained. Through those methods, she was able to find out if learning is satisfactory and where learning gaps in learning exist. Using different assessment methods will help you to match the assessment method, to the type of information you want to seek. And most importantly it will help you, how best to educate and assess rightly your students.

2. Do you think the expected students’ learning behaviors indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed through those assessment methods?

Yes, through the assessment methods used by the teacher, specifically performance based, pen and paper (worksheet, quiz), orals and presentations assessment methods, the students learning behaviors indicated in the objectives were properly and appropriately assessed by the teacher. The students can now able to reason out scientifically, apply science concepts to real- world situation and communicate effectively. Because of the varied assessment methods she used she was able to meet what she was seeking for.

My Reflections
A variety of assessment methods, provide teachers with evidence of what students know and can do and their particular strengths and weaknesses. It will help the teacher on the thing that he/she must need to do to improve his/her student's performance. In a single assessment instrument, it will not tell the teacher all that he/she needs to know about her student’s achievement and how it can be improved. Therefore, teachers must need to be familiarized with a variety of assessment tools so they can match it closely to the type of information they seek.

As I observed, the teacher were using different strategies of assessing her students these are performance based, pen and paper(quiz, worksheet),orals and presentations assessment methods, etc., to see what are the appropriate assessment methods that suits to the learning style of the learners, another, is to find out the strength and weaknesses of her students, to match the assessment methods on how  the students can comfortably express their thoughts, ideas, etc. and one thing more she was using varied assessment methods to measure what matters most. The teacher's strategies in assessing her students were very effective for she was successfully achieved her  goals with regards to her students.
